Rome Picks and Pans, Part Two
By FRANK BRUNI
La Taverna dei Fori Imperiali. This place is a real
find, unmentioned in most travel articles and unvisited by most tourists.
It’s about three or four blocks from where my friend Elizabeth Minchilli,
whom I mentioned in my post about Trattoria Monti, lives. She told me
that she and friends in the neighborhood kept walking by it after it
opened — which she said was somewhere between three and five years ago —
and wondering if it was any good.
Finally, one day, she dropped in for a meal. And she’s continued to eat
there since. It was with Elizabeth, her husband and several friends that
I dined here on one of my last nights in Rome.
The restaurant — simple-looking, with red-and-white checked tablecloths
that might put someone off but shouldn’t — has a medium-length menu plus
a raft of ever-changing daily specials, and Elizabeth advised us to go
with specials, whatever they were. We did.

TAVERNA DEI FORI IMPERIALI
The hokey checked tablecloths at Rome’s La Taverna dei Fori Imperiali
might suggest the food is hokey too, but that’s misleading: Alessio
Liberatore’s restaurant in a tangle of tiny streets is wonderful.
We loved: Fettuccine with prosciutto, pine nuts and
sage.
Insider tip: Do as the locals do and order the
specials.

The standard menu at neighbourhood favourite Taverna dei Fori Imperiali offers reasonably-priced, classic dishes such as gnocchi and saltimbocca alla romana, though regulars know to always ask about the day's specials for delicacies like home-made pasta with white-truffle ragu. The food at this family-run affair in the Monti area near the Colosseum has been described by former New York Times food critic Frank Bruni as "sensational", and it's all cooked by chef and owner Alessio Liberatore, whose children Aldo and Claudia serve diners nightly at the red-and-white checked tables. more..
